COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Five University of Utah men's basketball players have earned Mountain West Conference academic accolades, the league office announced this week.
Senior Jonathan Downie was named a 2008-09 MWC Scholar-Athlete as he received the conference's highest academic award for the second straight year. Downie posted a 3.76 GPA as a Biology major.
To be eligible for the MWC Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
Four others were recognized for their efforts in the classroom as well, earning academic all-conference awards for the spring semester: Tyler Kepkay (Senior, 3.00, Communication), Luka Drca (Junior, 3.32, Chemistry), Kim Tillie (Junior, 3.34, Urban Planning) and Carlon Brown (Sophomore, 3.30, Undeclared). Drca and Tillie have won the award in all three years of their career, while Kepkay and Brown are two-time honoreers.
To earn academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor. Sports included in the spring semester awards are baseball, basketball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.
