This Week's Action...
The Utah soccer team (5-3) is preparing for yet another challenging non-conference weekend against nationally-ranked competition as it heads to Los Angeles for the UCLA Women's Cup. The Utes will take on No. 4-ranked UCLA (4-1-1) Friday at 7 p.m. PT, then face Loyola Marymount (4-3) on a neutral pitch at 1 p.m. PT. Utah hopes for a repeat of its only other meeting with UCLA, a 2004 contest that saw the Utes capture a 2-1 win over the then-No. 7 ranked Bruins in Los Angeles. The Utes are 0-1-1 all-time against LMU, including a 0-0 draw last year, with both matches being played on the Lions' home turf. The previous result was a 1-0 victory for LMU in 2005.
Scouting This Week's Opponents...
UCLA - After taking a 7-2 loss at No. 1 North Carolina and playing to a 1-1 draw at No. 15 San Diego in its first two games of the year, UCLA has since ripped off four straight wins. Two of those victories came against Top 25 teams Illinois and Florida. Of those four wins, three were shutouts.
The Bruins are led on offense by sophomore forward Sydney Leroux, who has already netted six goals and registered an assist for 13 points. Senior forward Kristina Larsen has four goals and three helpers (11 points), while senior Lauren Cheney, a 2009 Olympic gold-medal winner as a member of the US Women's National Team, has scored twice.
In goal, redshirt sophomore Chante' Sandiford has played the majority of time, allowing just two goals and making 15 saves. She comes into the weekend with a goals-against-average of 0.39 and a save percentage of .882, leading to a 2-0-1 record with three shutouts.
The Bruins are coached by Jillian Ellis, now in her 11th season at the helm. Ellis is the third-winningest active head coach in Division I (by percentage) with a career record of 214-52-11 (.792), including 10 years at UCLA and two at Illinois.
LMU - Loyola Marymount is looking to bounce back from two straight losses last weekend, falling in overtime at Oregon, 3-2, then dropping a 2-1 decision to Oregon State on a neutral field. All four of LMU's wins have come by way of a shutout. Conversely, when allowing at least one goal, the Lions are 0-3.
LMU's offense is paced by sophomore forward/midfielder Erin Rementer's four goals. Junior forward Julie Callaudet has scored once but registered a team-high four assists, while junior midfielder/forward Gabrielle Parisella has also found the back of the net twice.
Goalkeeper Allyssa Clark has played all 646 minutes between the pipes for LMU, making 34 saves for a .810 save percentage, while allowing eight goals for a 1.12 GAA.
Loyola Marymount is coached by Joe Mallia, now in his third season leading the Lions. He has built a 26-15-4 (.622) record at LMU and holds a career mark of 113-60-13 (.642).
The Lions will face Missouri on Friday in the opening game of the UCLA Women's Cup, prior to Utah's match against the Bruins.
Utah To Face Utah State At Rio Tinto Stadium On Sept. 24...
Utah soccer will be on display on the biggest stage in the state, as the Utes face off against Utah State at 7 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium on Sept. 24. The home of Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake, Rio Tinto has a 20,000-seat capacity for soccer. Dalley Continues Successful Comeback, Scores In Two Straight...
Redshirt sophomore Erin Dalley has come off the bench to score in two straight games for the Utes, both in clutch situations. Against Princeton, Dalley out-jumped the Tiger defense and scored a header, breaking a 0-0 tie and netting the eventual game-winner in head coach Rich Manning's 100th career victory. Against No. 20 Colorado, she leveled the score at 1-1 with a 55th-minute tally, getting the Utes back in the game before they were undone by a CU goal with less than three minutes remaining.
Dalley appears to be back at full strength after knee injuries held her out of the entire 2008 season and the first two games of 2009. As a crucial substitute in six games this season, she has already equaled her freshman-year scoring output with three goals. Dalley has now racked up six goals and one assist for 13 points in 26 career games.
Manning Notches 100th Career Victory As Utes Shutout Princeton...
Utah head coach Rich Manning earned his 100th career win with the 2-0 victory against Princeton, all of which have come at Utah. Averaging more than 13.5 wins per year over his previous seven years, Manning looks to become only the second Mountain West Conference coach ever to hit the century mark, joining BYU's Jennifer Rockwood.
Freshmen Utes Making Big Impact...
Defender Natalie Young was the most recent freshman to open her collegiate scoring account with her goal against Princeton last week, as she became the third debutant to find the back of the net for the Utes this year. Young has appeared in six of Utah's eight games.
Utah brought in a class of seven freshman this year and each one has already made an impact on the squad. Forward Hanna Terry has started all seven games, while midfielder Allie Wisner has started six. Terry notched her first career goal in the win over Cal State Fullerton, then netted her second against William & Mary. Wisner and Terry both recorded an assist against Utah Valley.
Midfielder Stephanie Lemeza has started the last three games, logging her first career assist on Terry's goal against W&M, while defender Zoe Van Gorder also scored on a forceful header against UVU. Defender Ashley Mosley, who is currently nursing an ankle injury, played significant minutes in four matches prior to taking the knock, while forward Monica Okapal has also featured in three games for the Utes.
Regional Rankings...
Utah is currently ranked No. 9 in the Pacific Region by the NSCAA. After their 4-0 start, the Utes were listed as high as No. 3 in the region and were ranked or receiving votes for the national top 25 in all four major polls. Utah's next opponent, UCLA, is ranked No. 2 in the region and No. 4 nationally. Utah is currently receiving votes in the SoccerTimes.com Coaches' Poll.
Defensive Trends...
Utah has held its opponents scoreless on four occaisions this year. However, when allowing at least one goal, Utah's record drops to 1-3. The Utes have only allowed three goals in the run of play, but have conceded four strikes as a result of set pieces (one PK, one corner, two from free kicks).
Threatening From Everywhere...
Utah has now scored 15 goals on the year with 10 different players finding the back of the net. The Utes have had offensive production from all over the field, evidenced by the following goal breakdown by position: forward (9), attacking midfield (3), center back (2), holding midfield (1) and outside back (1). Utah has gotten multiple goals from four players, while six others have lit up the scoreboard once.
Utah Picks Up First Ranked Win Since 2007...
With the 1-0 victory against No. 19-ranked Santa Clara on Aug. 28, Utah registered its first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 16 BYU in Provo, 1-0, in October of 2007. It was the Utes' first victory over a ranked opponent at home since defeating No. 15 BYU, 1-0, in October of 2006.
Facing A Tough Schedule...
The Utes have not strayed from their goal of playing a diverse, difficult schedule year-in year-out. According to last week's NSCAA Top 25 Poll, six of Utah's opponents are ranked or receiving votes, listed here with the match date or result if already played: No. 5 UCLA (away, 9/18), No. 19 Oklahoma State (away, 10/29), No. 20 Colorado (L, 2-1), RV William & Mary (L, 3-1), RV Santa Clara (W, 1-0) and RV BYU (away, 10/3).
Utes Tie For Second In Preseason MWC Poll...
Utah has been selected second in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Utes are predicted to finish behind BYU, who received 49 points and seven of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. TCU received the only other first-place vote in the poll.
San Diego State and UNLV were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 30 and 28 points, respectively. New Mexico was ranked sixth (18 points), while Wyoming (14 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the top eight.
