This Week's Action...
The Utah soccer team (5-4-1) will be featured at one of the best soccer venues in the nation Thursday night as the Utes do battle with in-state rival Utah State (4-4-1) at 7 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The U. then returns home to Ute Field for its final non-conference tilt as the U. hosts Pepperdine (5-2), who is receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25, Sunday at 1 p.m.
Utah is 10-1 all-time against Utah State, however this match will mark their first-ever neutral-site contest. Utah State will be the designated home team. In their last meeting, Utah shut out Utah State, 2-0, at Ute Field last year. Midfielder Kelly Isleib scored the eventual game-winning goal, snapping a 0-0 tie in the 65th minute of play. Defender Morgan Skeen tacked on the insurance goal less than 10 minutes later.
The Utes are 1-1-2 in their four previous meetings with Pepperdine, including a 1-0 record at home. Their last meeting ended in a 2-2 draw on the Waves' home field in Malibu, Calif., in 2007. Utah's victory came in 2006 by way of a 2-0 shutout.
Scouting This Week's Opponents...
Utah State - The Aggies come into the game having lost their last two games and three of their last four, all on the road. Last weekend, USU fell at Washington, 2-0, and at Seattle, 3-1. Utah State's last win came at Houston Baptist on Sept. 13.
The Aggies are led offensively by Shantel Flanary and Lauren Hansen, both second-team All-WAC selections in 2008, who have each scored four goals and tallied two assists for 10 points. Six other players have found the back of the net as well. Molli Merrill has played most of the minutes between the pipes for the Aggies, making 37 saves and allowing 12 goals, for a 1.46 goals-against-average to go with a .755 save percentage.
Seventh-year head coach Heather Cairns has accumulated a 60-58-11 all-time record at the helm for USU, posting a winning percentage of .508.
Pepperdine - The Waves have won four of their last five games, all by way of shutouts. Last weekend they fell at Long Beach State, 3-1, then bounced back to defeat Sacramento State, 1-0.
Pepperdine's leading scorer is Michelle Spacciapolli with three goals. Three other players have scored two goals apiece including Kelly Reilly, who has also posted two assists. Roxanne Barker has played all but 45 minutes in the net for the Waves, making 18 saves and allowing six goals for a goal-against-average of 0.91 and a save percentage of .750.
The Waves are coached by Tim Ward, who has accumulated a 129-70-29 (.629) record, now in his 12th year.
The Ultimate Stage - Rio Tinto Stadium...
When the Utes take on Utah State at Rio Tinto Stadium Thursday night, they will utilize the same locker rooms, benches and playing surface that have played host to World Cup qualifying matches and are home to Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.
A 20,000-seat venue, the stadium is located in Sandy, Utah, just outside of Salt Lake City, and is easily accessible from I-15. Fans can check out this in-state rivalry at one of the best soccer facilities in the nation for as little as $5, while club level seats are available for $10. Kids wearing a soccer jersey to the game will get in free with adult purchase. Tickets are available now at www.riotintostadium.com.
"Pink on the Pitch" At Ute Field Sunday Afternoon...
Sunday will mark the first of Utah's 2009-10 Pink Games as the U. continues its ongoing campaign to help raise cancer awareness. Fans wearing pink will receive free admission, along with a pink ribbon pop-up hat.
Utah's Future On Display Once Again...
In Utah's 2-2 draw with Loyola Marymount on Sunday, freshman forward Hanna Terry scored the game's first goal off of an assist from freshman midfielder Stephanie Lemeza. Terry is now tied as the team's second-leading scorer with three goals, while Lemeza is tied for third in assists with two. The tally marked the third time this year that a freshman has linked up with another freshman for a goal, giving the Utes a glimpse at what they believe is a bright future for this crop of newcomers.
With five of the seven freshmen on the roster logging at least one goal or assist, the class as a whole has accounted for five scores and four helpers (14 points), or roughly 26% of the team's total offense. All seven have seen significant playing time with Terry (10 starts), Allie Wisner (8) and Lemeza (4) all cracking the starting lineup.
Defensive Trends... Utah has held its opponents scoreless on four occaisions this year. However, when allowing at least one goal, Utah's record drops to 1-4-1.
Threatening From Everywhere...
Utah has now scored 19 goals on the year with 10 different players finding the back of the net. The Utes have had offensive production from all over the field, evidenced by the following goal breakdown by position: forward (11), holding midfield (4), center back (2), attacking midfield (1) and outside back (1). Utah has gotten multiple goals from five players, while five others have lit up the scoreboard once.
Manning Notches 100th Career Victory As Utes Shut Out Princeton...
Utah head coach Rich Manning earned his 100th career win with the 2-0 victory against Princeton, all of which have come at Utah. Averaging more than 13.5 wins per year over his previous seven years, Manning looks to become only the second Mountain West Conference coach ever to hit the century mark, joining BYU's Jennifer Rockwood.
Utah Picks Up First Ranked Win Since 2007...
With the 1-0 victory against No. 19-ranked Santa Clara on Aug. 28, Utah registered its first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 16 BYU in Provo, 1-0, in October of 2007. It was the Utes' first victory over a ranked opponent at home since defeating No. 15 BYU, 1-0, in October of 2006.
Facing A Tough Schedule...
The Utes have never strayed from their goal of playing a diverse, difficult schedule year-in year-out. According to last week's NSCAA Top 25 Poll, seven of Utah's opponents are ranked or receiving votes, listed here with the match date or result if already played: No. 4 UCLA (away, 9/18), No. 12 Santa Clara (W, 1-0), No. 23 Colorado (L, 2-1), No. 24 Oklahoma State (away, 10/29), RV Pepperdine (home, 9/27), RV William & Mary (L, 3-1), and RV BYU (away, 10/3). The new poll has not yet been released.
Utes Tie For Second In Preseason MWC Poll...
Utah has been selected second in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Utes are predicted to finish behind BYU, who received 49 points and seven of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. TCU received the only other first-place vote in the poll.
San Diego State and UNLV were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 30 and 28 points, respectively. New Mexico was ranked sixth (18 points), while Wyoming (14 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the top eight.
From the Mind of Manning...
On playing Thursday's Game At Rio Tinto Stadium:
"Rio Tinto Stadium is such a spectacular venue. I have been there several times and I know our players have been many times. I think when they walk out on field Thursday it will seem like dream to many of them. This should provide a great environment for a top-notch women's college soccer match, and I'm sure it will raise the level of play for both sides. We really hope to continue this relationship and play some future games there as well."
On the upcoming opposition:
"Since I have been at Utah, all of our games with Utah State have been hard-fought and close battles. I think Heather (Cairns) does a fantastic job with her team. They are the defending WAC champs, they play hard and defend very well, and I expect another tight contest.
"All of our games played with Pepperdine in recent years have been among the most enjoyable and entertaining we've had. They play a style that's fun to watch, they are skillful, they move the ball quickly, get up and down field and play good quality soccer overall. I think it always makes for a good matchup. When you see two teams that keep the ball and move quickly around the field, it is usually a very entertaining game, and think Sunday will be that type of a game."
