SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (8-7, 1-0 MWC) puts its three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday as the Runnin' Utes head to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico (14-3, 0-2 MWC). Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. MT at the The Pit.
Utah is 78-46 (.629) all-time against UNM but has not won on the Lobos' home floor since Jan. 21, 2002, dropping seven straight contests at The Pit. The Utes are 1-2 on the road this year and are still carrying the momentum of their road victory at LSU on Jan. 2.
Last year's matchup in Albuquerque saw the Utes fall by a 77-71 score after they had beaten the Lobos in Salt Lake City, 69-68. The last four games in this series have been decided by a total of 10 points.
Utah is looking to win its fourth straight game overall and stay unbeaten in the MWC after thumping TCU by a 65-45 margin in Salt Lake City to open its league schedule. Utah has done it with defense during that run, holding all three opponents under 60 points and two of them under 50. The Utes now rank fourth in the MWC and No. 53 in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense, holding their opponents to just 39.6% from the field.
Junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) is the Utes' leading scorer this year, averaging 13.3 points per game to go with 5.3 rebounds, which ranks second on the squad. Senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) has been the Utes' top scorer in all three games during their recent winning streak and ranks second for the year at 11.1 points per contest. He is also the Utes' leading assist-man, averaging 4.1 helpers per game. Utah will be without its leading rebounder, senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France), who is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
Utah sophomore center David Foster (Lake Forest, Calif.) is the nation's No. 5-ranked shot-blocker at 4.3 per game. As a team, the Utes rank No. 26 in the NCAA at 6.6 rejections per contest.
After going 14-1 in non-conference play and earning a national ranking as high as No. 15, New Mexico is still searching for its first league win after dropping two straight. UNM fell at San Diego State, 74-64 in their MWC opener, then dropped a 74-62 decision to UNLV in The Pit last Saturday.
Darington Hobson is the Lobos' top player, leading the team in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg) and assists (4.4 apg) while playing the most minutes on the squad (32.1). Roman Martinez (15.2), Dairese Gary (10.9) and Phillip McDonald (10.6) are all scoring in double figures as well.
Utah head coach Jim Boylen captured his 50th career win with the victory over TCU, bringing his three-year head coaching record to 50-32 (.610). Third-year Lobo head coach Steve Alford holds a 60-24 (.714) record at New Mexico.
