SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will be sending a full squad to the Bengal Shootout on Friday in Pocatello, Idaho. The meet will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Idaho State's Holt Arena.
"It is great to be back with the whole team competing this week," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "This will be a nice meet to get our season officially under way and get that competitive feel back."
Schools competing at the meet include host Idaho State, BYU, Weber State, Utah State, Utah Valley, Southern Utah and North Dakota.
Last week, a limited group of Utes competed in the BYU Indoor Invitational in Provo, Utah. Senior Sarah Grimm had a standout day in the weight throw event with a toss of 59-9.25 to earn first place. The mark is a new personal best which ranks third in school history and first in the conference.
Another Ute with early success was freshman Alyssa Johnson in the 300m dash. She won her event outright with a time of 41.11. At the Bengal Shootout on Friday, Johnson will be competing in the 200m dash.
The young Utah team will be looking to get their feet wet in this meet, as for many this will be the first collegiate meet of their career.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH KEPLER
"For the majority of our team this will be the first meet of their collegiate careers. Our goals are simple: compete hard and learn about yourself. In our team meeting today we'll be discussing the importance of focusing on the positives and worry about the negatives as we continue practicing. We aren't worrying about a time, distance, or height as much as being able to establish a baseline and learning something from the experience.
"The freshmen have a mixture of emotions of excitement and nervousness, so we'll be talking with them a lot to go over race plans and other things to help them manage their nerves."
