SALT LAKE CITY - The Runnin' Ute basketball team (8-8, 1-1 MWC) continues its road trip Saturday as it takes on UNLV (14-3, 2-1 MWC) in Las Vegas at 7 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
Utah is 20-21 (.488) all-time against UNLV, including a 6-14 record on the Rebels' home floor. The Utes are looking to pick up their first win over the Rebels at the Thomas & Mack Center since 2005, when the Utes took a 57-53 victory. Utah has had good success in that arena recently against other opposition, going 3-0 in last year's Mountain West Conference Tournament to win the league crown.
Last year's matchup in Las Vegas saw the Utes fall by a 75-65 score. Former center Luke Nevill was Utah's leading scorer with 14 points, while three other Utes had 11, including current senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia). Drca also tied for the game high in rebounds with seven. In the return trip to Salt Lake City, Utah bounced back to beat the Rebels, 70-60.
Utah is coming off a 74-57 loss to New Mexico at The Pit which snapped a three-game win streak. The Utes were led on the stat sheet by freshman guard Marshall Henderson (Hurst, Texas) with 12 points, while senior guard Drca was the leading rebounder with six boards.
Junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) is the Utes' leading scorer this season, averaging 12.7 points per game to go with 5.1 rebounds, which ranks second on the squad. Drca has been the Utes' top scorer in three of the last four games and ranks second for the year at 10.9 points per contest. He is also the Utes' leading assist man, averaging 3.9 helpers per game. Utah may see the return of its leading rebounder, senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France), who is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
Utah sophomore center David Foster (Lake Forest, Calif.) is the nation's No. 5-ranked shot-blocker at 4.1 per game. As a team, the Utes rank No. 26 in the NCAA at 6.4 rejections per contest.
UNLV enters the game following a 76-66 home victory against San Diego State, Wednesday. Tre'Von Willis led the Rebels with 23 points, while Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield had 18 and 12, respectively. On the season, Willis is UNLV's top scorer at 16.0 points per game, while Stanback is the leading Rebel rebounder at 5.4 per contest. Bellfield leads the squad in assists at 4.8 per game.
Utah head coach Jim Boylen captured his 50th career win with the victory over TCU, bringing his three-year head coaching record to 50-33 (.602). Sixth-year UNLV head coach Lon Kruger holds a 126-56 (.692) record at the Rebel helm.
