SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will be well prepared for the Bronco Invitational this Saturday after taking a week off from competition.
The Bronco Invitational is hosted by Boise State in Boise, Idaho and will be a one-day event held Saturday, January 30. The field events will begin at 9:15 a.m. MT with the women's weight throw. The track events are slotted to start at 11:00 a.m. with the women's 1000m run.
Competing schools include Boise State, Weber State, Northwest Nazarene University, Utah State, BYU, Eastern Oregon, Whitworth College, Cal State Los Angeles, and Cal State Stanislaus.
The Utes were last seen at the Bengal Shoot Out in Pocatello, Idaho on January 15 winning three events with several athletes setting new personal records. Senior Sarah Grimm won the weight throw and true freshman Nikkie Rudder won the shot put. Utah's 4x400m relay team comprised of Whitney Wellington, Chelsey Kaplar, Alyssa Johnson and Ashley Mosley won outright with a time of 3:53.63.
STRAIGHT FROM HEAD COACH Kyle Kepler:
"I know our team and my staff are excited to get back to competing. It's always difficult to come out of Christmas Break, have a meet, and then practice for two weeks before another meet. However, that's what the schedule dictated this year. For a few of our athletes this will be their opening meet so I know they are even more anxious than those who have been on the track already. Overall, I think the coaching staff feels good about the progress of their event groups. I thought we did a good job of staying focused and making the most of our practices over the last couple of weeks. Ultimately, our performances at the meet will dictate where we really are."
"Our goals will revolve around improving, continuing to gain experience with our freshmen, and maintaining good health with everyone. We are still a month away from our championship meets, so we have to be smart. A few athletes are fighting some nagging injuries, but that is normal this time of year due to both the volume and intensity that is required during this part of the season. I thought we competed well and were tough at our last meet. We need to continue to build on that attitude and make sure we fight for every place we can get."
