SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team (10-10, 3-3 MWC) travels to Provo, Utah, Saturday for a Deseret First Duel matchup at No. 12/10 BYU (20-2, 5-1 MWC). Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center and the game will be televised live on The Mtn.
Utah leads the all-time series with the Cougars, 125-123 overall but are 47-69 on BYU's home floor. The Utes have not won at the Marriott Center since Feb. 11, 2006. In their last meeting in Provo, BYU won by a score of 63-50. When the two teams faced off in Salt Lake City last season, Utah captured a 94-88 victory in overtime.
Both teams enter Saturday's game following tough road losses. The Utes fell at Wyoming, 75-69. Junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) was Utah's top scorer as he registered a career-high 31 points. The Cougars dropped a 76-72 contest at No. 23 New Mexico. Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 27 points.
Saturday's game pits the MWC's best 3-point shooting team against the league's best 3-point defense. BYU leads the conference at 41.6% from beyond the arc, while Utah has held its opponents to 29.4% from long range.
Brown is Utah's leading scorer on the season at 13.9 points per game. Senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) is the Utes' top rebounder at 5.8 boards per contest. Leading the U. in assists is senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) with 3.8 per game, while ranking third in scoring on the squad at 10.6 ppg.
Utah head coach Jim Boylen holds a 52-35 (.598) record in his third year at Utah. BYU head coach Dave Rose, in his fifth year at the Cougar helm, holds a 117-36 (.765) record.
The Utes are 1-2 this season in conference road games, 2-4 including all away contests.
The Deseret First Duel
The rivalry series includes the 12 sports the two universities compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. Points are awarded to the winner of each competition. In men's basketball, Utah and BYU face each other twice, with each game worth five points. The Utah vs. BYU rivalry is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. In November 2005, the Wall Street Journal rated the rivalry the fourth best in college athletics.
