KNOXVILLE, Tenn - The 53rd-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (1-1) was defeated by fifth-ranked Tennessee (3-0), 7-0, during the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

In doubles Timmy Allin and Jason Smits were defeated by Boris Conkic and Rhyne Williams, 8-0, from the No. 2 position. The Vols won the doubles point from the No. 1 slot, Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding fell to John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren, 8-5. The match from the No. 3 spot went unfinished between the Ute duo Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano and the Vols doubles team of Max Stevens and Edward Jones.

In singles freshman Golding was defeated in the No. 3 slot by Williams, 6-1, 6-2, giving Tennessee a 2-0 lead over Utah. The Vols continued their lead from the No. 4 position, Smits was defeated by Sandgren, 6-1, 6-2. Tennessee clinched the match from the No. 2 spot, Suriano fell to Conkic, 6-1, 6-2.

Senior Eilers was defeated by Smith in the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-2. From the No. 6 slot Jacobs fell to Matteo Fago, 6-3, 6-1. Allin was defeated by Matt Brewer in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-3. The Utes will play in a consolation round Monday at 9 a.m. ET against No. 48 VCU.
