BOISE, Idaho - Alejandro Medinilla of the Utah men's tennis team advanced to the singles semi finals at the Boise State Classic Saturday. Several other Utes also advanced through consolation play.
The No. 4 seeded Medinilla defeated Lenny Whiting of Utah State, 6-4, 6-0, in the third round, then defeated Doug Mayeda of Oregon, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarter finals. He will take on Ratan Gill of Portland on Sunday.
In consolation singles play freshman Gino Octa came from behind to defeat Dan Buckingham of Idaho State, 1-6, 7-6, 10-6, in the second round. He then came back from another first set loss to beat Jordan Prince of Seattle, 1-6, 7-6, 10-6, in the quarterfianls. Octa will now face Pablo Mosquera Perez of Gonzaga in Sunday's semifinals. In another consolation singles bracket, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov took down Bryan Marchant of Utah State in the second round, 6-3, 6-4, then topped Jackson Martin of Portland, 7-6, 6-2. Mamedov will take on the No. 5 seeded Jake Asplund of Utah State on Sunday in the semi finals.
Freshman Devin Lane fell to Baptiste Faynot of Oregon, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, in the third round of main draw singles. Brad Weaver fell to No. 2 seeded Robin Cambier of Oregon, 0-6, 3-6, in the third round.
The No. 1 seeded Utah doubles Mamedov and Octa, fell to Jackson Martin and Bryan Thorp of Portland, 4-8, in main draw doubles. Lane and Medinilla fell to David Kovas and Jordan Prince of Seattle, 8-9, in consolation doubles quarter finals.
Play will resume at the Appleton Tennis Center Sunday at 8 a.m.
