BOISE, Idaho - The Utah men's tennis team wrapped up the first tournament of the fall season Sunday at the Boise State Classic. Overall, the Ute coaching staff was encouraged with the team's play over the weekend.
"It was a great opprotunity to see the guys play in a competitive environment," said head coach F.D Robbins. "We have a better idea of what we need to work on and look forward to seeing those improvements in next week's home tournament."
After reaching the semifinals of the main draw, Alejandro Medinilla fell to Ratan Gill of Portland, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Gino Octa reached the orange consolation finals before falling to Jason Bediones of Seattle,6-3, 6-4. In the Blue consolation bracket, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov defeated the No. 5 seeded Jake Asplund of Utah State, 6-3, 7-6. In the finals, Mamedov lost to Alex Joitoiu of Utah State, 7-3, 6-3.
In consolation doubles play, the No. 1 seeded Mamedov and Octa moved on to the finals before falling to Stefan Simikic and Flavio Malagutti of Eastern Washinton in a tight match, 9-7.
The Utes' next action will be at home for the Utah Invitational, Oct. 14-16, held at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
