SALT LAKE CITY - Junior outside hitter Jennifer Lanting established a new career high with 13 kills and the University of Utah volleyball team won a three-set decision against Air Force (25-10, 25-19, 25-18) Saturday in a Mountain West Conference contest at Crimson Court.
In its second consecutive MWC sweep, Utah (9-10, 4-2 MWC) held Air Force to a -.012 mark on the attack, a season-best defensive effort for the Utes. On the attack, Utah managed a .260 mark with a pair of players earning double-digits in kills. The Utes also outblocked the Falcons by an 8-3 margin and held a 5-2 edge in service aces.
"We aren't going to beat any one 25-0," Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "There will be ups and downs throughout the match, especially when we play a lot of different people. Considering the circumstances, the players coming off the bench did a really nice job for us."
Lanting's career-high 13 kills came on just 18 swings and only one attack error for a career-high .667 hitting percentage, which was .200 above her previous personal best. The Corcoran, Calif., native connected on her first seven attack attempts in the match.
"We are very pleased with what Jen is doing out on the court," Launiere said. "She is helping us a lot right now. We passed the ball better this afternoon and have been focusing so much on our blocking and defense that we had to get back to our offense. Our passing was pretty good this afternoon."
Erin Redd registered her sixth double-digit-kill performance this season with 10 kills on 16 attempts with just one error for a .562 clip. Redd also took match-high honors with five blocks.
Utah senior setter Stephanie Neeley coordinated the Ute attack with 32 assists and also recorded seven digs. The Saugus, Calif., native now has 2,690 career assists, which is fifth in school history. Neeley also tied with Morgan Odale for match-high honors with two service aces.
The Utes performed well at the net, earning a five-block advantage in team blocks (8-3). "We blocked more balls and we are getting balls blocked down," Launiere said. "Earlier in the season, we were touching balls but we weren't getting them down. So we had a lot of stop blocks this afternoon, which is encouraging. We are making progress."
In the back row, Keisha Fisher extended her double-digit-dig streak to five matches with a match-high 10 digs. Fisher now has had 10 digs 77 times over her career and now owns 1,399 career digs, which is 177 short of tying the school record.
Utah took the opening four points of the first set before sprinting out to a 7-2 edge. The Utes closed the set on a 9-2 run and cruised to a 25-10 win in the first set. The Utes outhit the Falcons in the set, .423 to -.190, while Danielle Killpack hit a team-high five kills in the opener to go along with four kills apiece from Lanting and Redd.
The Utes assumed a 4-2 edge to start the second set before Air Force cut its deficit to one point on a pair of occasions. With the score at 5-4, Utah used a 4-1 spurt to set a 9-5 lead. The Falcons fought back with a 4-1 run to climb back within a point for the third time in the set. Utah worked to get its lead back to four points, 15-11, before pushing its lead to eight points with a 19-11 margin. The Utes went on to claim a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 second-set victory. Utah held Air Force to .061 hitting percentage in the set and hit for a .227 clip on the attack.
Utah is now 4-0 when winning the first two sets of a match this season.
Air Force claimed its first lead of the match by tallying the first two points of the third set but Utah quickly came back to take its first lead of the set at 4-3. The Falcons responded with a 4-0 run to claim its largest lead of the match, 7-5, but the Utes used a 4-1 stretch to take a 9-8 lead. Air Force would take the lead back again (11-10) before a furious 8-1 Utah run would give them an 18-12 advantage. The Utes would maintain their comfortable cushion and go on to take a match-clinching 25-18 win in the third set.
Air Force (3-17, 0-7 MWC) received six kills apiece from Nichole Stilwell and Caroline Kurtz. Kelly Spencer popped up a team-high nine digs.
The Utes went 2-0 with sweeps against UNLV and Air Force this weekend at Crimson Court.
"We needed to come home and get a couple wins. There is no question about it," Launiere said. "We have had good practices, but it definitely helps to get some victories."
The Utes hit the road for conference road matches at TCU (Thursday at 6:30 p.m. MT) and New Mexico (Saturday at 2 p.m. MT). Thursday's match at TCU will be televised live on The Mtn. (Comcast - 37; DirecTV - 616).
