FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah volleyball team outhit TCU .342 to .167 as it claimed a 3-0 win over the Horned Frogs (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) in a Mountain West Conference match Thursday at the University Recreation Center.
Utah (10-10, 5-2 MWC) is enjoying its first three-match win streak of the season. The Utes have won their last nine sets, recording three consecutive sweeps, and now have four 3-0 wins this season. Against TCU, Utah held a 7-0 edge in service aces as well as a 55-48 advantage in digs and outblocked the Horned Frogs, 8.5 to 6.
"We played well the entire match," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "There wasn't a point where we let up. We just stayed on the offensive all night and played excellent defense, probably the best defense we played all season. We were able to transition our defense into offense. It was a very well-played match."
Karolina Barktowiak hit a match-high 13 kills with only three errors on 27 attempts for a .370 hitting percentage. The Aurora, Ill., native just missed her seventh double-double of the season and the 19th of her career as she registered nine digs and also contributed three blocks. Bartkowiak has hit double-digits in kills 13 times this season.
"Bartkowiak stepped up and was able to lead a very balanced offensive attack for us tonight," Launiere said. "Everyone played well, but she was almost unstoppable."
A trio of Utes pounded down nine kills apiece in the match. Erin Redd committed just one attack error on 15 swings for a team-high .533 mark. The Spanish Fork, Utah native collected a match-high five blocks. Danielle Killpack achieved the feat and needed just 16 swings while only committing a pair of errors for a .438 mark. Morgan Odale only committed two attack errors on 27 attempts for a .259 clip. Odale also served a career-high four aces.
Senior setter Stephanie Neeley dished out 41 assists while coordinating the Ute attack and also dished out 12 digs for her 24th career double-double and 10th this season. Neeley now has 2,361 career assists, which stands fifth in school history.
In the back row, libero Keisha Fisher dug up a match-high 17 Horned Frog attack attempts to extend her double-digit-dig streak to six matches. She has 1,416 career assists, which is 160 short of tying the school record. Fisher has had 10 or more digs in 18 matches this season and 78 over her career.
The Utes leaped out to an 8-5 lead in the first set and maintained their three-point lead until 22-19 before closing the set on a 3-1 to take the opening set, 25-20. Utah hit .412 in the opener while TCU registered a .333 mark. Killpack and Bartkowiak totaled four kills apiece in the first set while Bartkowiak added two blocks.
Utah scored seven of the first eight points in the second set before using a 16-10 stretch to take its biggest lead of the set, 12 points at 23-11, before going on to a 25-17 second-set victory. The Utes limited the Horned Frogs to a .119 hitting percentage while going for a .302 mark offensively. Bartkowiak and Odale hit five kills apiece as Redd led the Utes' charge at the net with five blocks. Utah outblocked TCU in the set, 4-2.
The Utes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set then Odale served consecutive aces to give Utah a 6-2 edge. Utah would eventually work its lead to 11 points, 22-11, en route to a 25-15 win to clinch the match. The balanced offensive attack continued into the third set as Bartkowiak and Killpack both pounded down four more kills in the set as the Utes outhit the Horned Frogs, .324 to .103.
TCU (12-8, 3-3 MWC) received a team-high 11 kills from Irene Hester. Three Horned Frogs reached double-figures in digs, paced by a team-high 13 from Christy Hudson.
"We're happy with this win, but we went on this road trip for two matches," Launiere said. "We didn't come down to Texas and New Mexico for just one. We've talked about it and we know we have a lot of work to do to prepare for Saturday's match."
