SALT LAKE CITY - Thanks to a 19-7 run over the final 6:15, the University of Utah men's basketball team (7-3) completed its comeback victory over Boise State (6-4), 86-84, Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Down 77-67 with 6:15 remaining, the Utes scored 19 of the final 26 points of the contest. The stretch culminated with junior wing Will Clyburn burying the game-winning 3-pointer with 11 seconds left. Utah trailed by 16 at the 14:03, but came back for the two-point victory. This tied for the largest in four seasons under head coach Jim Boylen, tying the Utes' 16-point comeback against Illinois in a neutral-site game in Las Vegas on Nov. 28, 2009.
Utah shot 52.6% from the field (30-of-57) for the game, including a season-high-tying 10 3-pointers on 22 attempts. Boise State managed a 47.1% mark (33-of-70) from the field, but did hold a 38-33 edge in rebounds over Utah.
Clyburn was one of five Utes to surpass double-figures in points, a season-high for the team. Clyburn totaled a team-high 22 points and dished out a career-high six assists to go with eight rebounds. He has tallied double-figures in every game this season and has gone over 20 points six times. Clyburn has led Utah in scoring in eight of 10 games this year.
Chris Hines set a new career high with 13 points after nailing three of six shots from 3-point territory and 4-of-8 from the field overall. Josh Watkins hit his first four shots from the field and ended the game 5-of-9 from the floor for 12 points. Shawn Glover registered a career-high three blocks to go along with his 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Jason Washburn was an efficient 4-of-6 from the floor for 12 points to go with seven rebounds and three blocks.
Utah had a distinct 10-2 advantage in team blocks over Boise State, led by David Foster's team-high four blocks to push his career total to 147. He now trails Mitch Smith's second-place mark of 161, set from 1985-89 and is chasing the all-time mark held by Luke Nevill, who swatted 205 shots from 2005-09.
After giving up the first bucket of the contest, Utah went on a 7-0 run for an early advantage, including a pair of jump shots by Josh Watkins. The Utes hit eight of their first 11 shots and extended their lead to nine points at 17-8, but the Broncos regained the lead at 22-21 after taking 14 of the next 18 points. BSU went on to lead by as many as 11 points, 44-33, before the Utes managed to trim their deficit to eight points at intermission, 48-40.
Both teams shot over 50.0% from the field as Utah connected on 15 of 29 attempts (51.7%) and Boise State hit on 20 of its 39 shots (51.3%). Hines scored a team-high 10 points on a 3-of-4 effort from the floor, which included a 2-of-3 mark from 3-point range. Josh Watkins registered eight points in the opening half after hitting four of his six shots. The Utes committed seven turnovers in the opening half, compared to just one for the Broncos. BSU also held a 19-16 edge in rebounds and 10 of their rebounds came at the offensive end.
Clyburn hit three of his first four shots in the second half but Boise State extended its advantage to 16 points (66-50). Utah responded with a 10-3 run, that included three consecutive 3-pointers by Glover and Hines, to bring their deficit back to single digits, 68-60. Utah worked its deficit to seven points on two more occasions before five points from Clyburn ignited a 14-5 spurt that brought Utah within a point, 82-81. Josh Watkins then drew a blocking foul to tie the game at 82 and a second free throw by Josh Watkins gave Utah an 83-82 lead. The Broncos took the lead for the final time, 84-83, after a La'Shard Anderson layup.
Boise State was led by a game-high 28 points from Daequon Montreal. He also tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds. Robert Arnold added 16 points and five rebounds while Ryan Watkins contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Utes head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Diamondhead Classic Dec. 22-25. Utah's first game of the tournament will be against Butler on Wednesday at 9 p.m. MT.
