SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team (10-11, 3-4 MWC) hosts Colorado State (12-9, 3-4 MWC) Wednesday as both teams look to close the first round of Mountain West Conference games with a .500 record. Tip-off at the Jon M. Huntsman Center is slated for 6 p.m. The game will be televised live on The Mtn.
The Utes are 7-5 at home this season, 2-1 in conference games, while CSU is 1-7 on the road, including a 1-2 mark in league play.
Utah leads the all-time series with the Rams, 100-42 overall, including a 55-15 record in Salt Lake City. The Utes have won five straight games against CSU and have not lost to the Rams since Jan. 9, 2007. Utah has not lost to Colorado State under the leadership of head coach Jim Boylen.
Entering the game, Utah leads the MWC in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing its opponents to make just 30.4% from long range. That number dips to 26.8% in conference play. Colorado State is statistically the league's worst 3-point shooting team, making just 34.5% from beyond the arc and only 29.6% in league games.
Both teams enter Wednesday's tilt looking to bounce back from double-digit losses. The Utes fell at BYU, 82-69 last Saturday, while the Rams dropped a home contest to San Diego State, 64-52. Against the Cougars, Utah junior forward Jay Watkins (Memphis, Tenn.) registered a double-double with Utah career-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team in both. Freshman guard Marshall Henderson (Hurst, Texas) chipped in 16 points as well.
In the Rams' loss to SDSU, Andy Ogide was their leading scorer with 13 points while Travis Franklin and Pierce Hornung tied with a team-high seven boards. Franklin also added 10 points.
On the season, junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) is Utah's leading scorer with 13.4 points per game, while senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) is the Utes' top rebounder at 5.6 boards per contest. Leading the U. in assists is senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) with 3.8 per game, while tying Watkins for third on the squad in scoring at 10.4 ppg. Drca needs only four more assists to crack the top 10 all-time at Utah.
Boylen holds a 52-36 (.591) record in his third year at Utah. CSU head coach Tim Miles, also in his third year, holds a 28-56 (.333) record at the helm for the Rams.
