SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team opens its 2010 season on Friday, Feb. 19, against UC Davis for the first of a three-game series.
"Naturally we're excited about starting our season," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We had a great fall and had great winter workouts. I think we are ahead of the curve at this point because we have practiced outside several times. In past years that hasn't happened. We feel like we're a little more game ready. I'm looking forward to this weekend to see where we are."
All-MWC pitcher Jordan Whatcott (5-3, 4.19 ERA in 2009) opens the series for the Utes' on the mound on Friday, with Andrew Wilding (2-5, 6.29 ERA in 2009) getting the start on Saturday. Junior college All-American Rick Anton (22 wins, 189 strikeouts at Yavapai JC) starts his first game for Utah on Sunday. UC Davis had not released its pitching lineup at press time.
UC Davis finished with a 13-42 record last season, going 5-19 in the Big West to finish ninth. The Aggies top returning player is Justin Schafer, who led the team with a .338 batting average last season, including a team-high seven stolen bases. Kyle Mihaylo led UC Davis with 10 doubles. On the mound, Dayne Quist was 2-6 with a 5.48 ERA and Tom Briner was 2-5 and had a 5.53 ERA.
Utah was selected to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference this season in the preseason coaches and media poll. In addition, senior third baseman Nick Kuroczko was selected to the preseason all-conference team.
