SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Utah men's basketball team (12-13, 5-6 MWC) takes on San Diego State (19-7, 8-4 MWC) Saturday in San Diego as the Runnin' Utes look to avenge a home loss to the Aztecs earlier this season. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. PT.
The Utes are carrying the momentum of a 66-61 home win against UNLV as they completed a season sweep of the Rebels. San Diego State, who is receiving votes in the national Top 25, may be the hottest team in the league right now, having won three straight games and five of its last six, losing only to New Mexico on the road in overtime. In their last outing, the Aztecs topped TCU on the road, 68-51.
The first time Utah and SDSU met this season was Jan. 19 in Salt Lake City, where the Aztecs won 70-68. Junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) led Utah with 18 points, while three other Utes logged double digits as well. SDSU was led by Malcolm Thomas' double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Kawhi Leonard also logged a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Utah shot just 36.7% for the game, while SDSU shot to 47.5% from the field.
The Utes won two of three meetings against San Diego State last year, including a 52-50 victory in Las Vegas as Utah captured the 2009 MWC Tournament Championship.
Utah leads the all-time series with SDSU, 53-14, including a 19-10 advantage in San Diego. However, Utah has not won on the Aztecs' home floor since Feb. 11, 2006.
Brown is Utah's leading scorer for the season with 13.8 points per game, while senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) is the Utes' top rebounder at 5.3 boards per contest. Senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) is leading the U. in assists with 3.4 per game and sophomore center David Foster (Lake Forest, Calif.), is ranked No. 4 in the NCAA with 4.4 rejections per contest. He had five in the previous matchup with the Aztecs.
Leonard leads SDSU in scoring and rebounding with 12.7 points per game to go with 9.0 rebounds. Billy White (11.0), Thomas (10.2) and D.J. Gay (10.3) all average double-figure point totals as well. Gay is leading the team in assists with 3.0 per game.
In his three years as the Utah head coach, Jim Boylen is 3-3 against the Aztecs. Overall, he has led the Utes to a 54-38 (.587) record. SDSU head coach Steve Fisher, now in his 11th year, holds a 192-147 (.566) record with the Aztecs.
