Last Time Out: Utah went 2-3 last weekend at UNLV's Louisville Slugger Classic. The Utes were defeated by No. 12/11 California, 10-4, and Hawai'i, 11-8, on the opening day of the event. Utah came back to win both games on Saturday, run-ruling Cal State Fullerton, 11-3 in five innings, and beating Indiana, 7-1, in the second game of the day. A 10-2 loss in five innings to No. 21/T-21 Northwestern on Sunday morning wrapped up the weekend.
Quick Starters: The Utes have scored in the first inning of all 10 games this season and are outscoring their opponents 22-6 in the first frame. Utah has also been the first team to score in every game so far in 2010.
`Jasey J' Leads the Ute Offense: Junior right fielder Jasey Jensen (Layton, Utah) posted team highs in batting average (.571), hits (8), RBI (6), total bases (13) and stolen bases (2) in five games last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
Making Their Mark: Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) are mentioned in seven different categories in the Utah career record books. Aside from being the U.'s all-time leader with 56 career home runs, Foster is listed in batting average (.334, .07 shy of No. 5), runs (117, 13 shy of No. 5), doubles (31, nine shy of No. 5) and RBI (139, 15 shy of No. 3). Smuda could enter the top five in appearances (86, 22 shy of No. 5), wins (37, 16 shy of No. 5) and strikeouts (325, 16 shy of No. 5).
997 and Counting: With three more wins, Utah would claim its 1,000th victory in program history. The Utes' all-time record is 997-734-5 (.567).
Scouting the Cathedral City Classic Field:
Oregon (8-4): The Ducks are in search of their first three-game win streak of the season. UO has won back-to-back games four times this season but have yet to win a third straight. A pair of Duck hitters own batting averages over .500, led by Blair Williamson who is hitting at a .563 clip with nine hits in 16 at-bats with five RBI. Sam Pappas is hitting .513 with a team-high 20 hits, including six home runs, with 15 RBI. Starting pitchers Brittany Rumfelt and Jessica Moore have combined for a 6-1 record early this season. Rumfelt is 3-0 with a miniscule 0.47 ERA in 15 innings of work. Moore has carried the lion's share of innings thus far, going 38.0 innings in seven appearances, with a 1.47 ERA. Moore and Sam Skillingstad have two complete games each in 2010.
No. 19/21 Fresno State (7-1): The Bulldogs won their first six games this season, sweeping a doubleheader against Santa Clara and winning all four games at their Fresno State Kick-Off before being blanked by Illinois 5-0 Saturday at the Stanford/Nike Invitational. Their final two games against Sacramento State and Stanford at the same event were rained out. Michelle Moses is hitting .429, which places second on the team, and is also tied for the team lead with nine hits and six RBI. Seven different Bulldogs have hit home runs this season. FSU is hitting .335 this season, compared to just a .170 average for its opponents. Morgan Melloh is 4-1 on the mound with a 0.73 ERA in five appearances.
Baylor (6-4): The Lady Bears started their season with a 2-3 showing at the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic, suffering losses to Louisville (twice) and Ohio State. LBSU went 2-3 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic last weekend. Nalani St. Germain is hitting .385 with a team-high five home runs, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage. As a team, LBSU is hitting .267 while its opponents are hitting .331. Starting pitcher Taylor Petty is 2-3 in 2010 with a 2.86 ERA.
UC Davis (6-3): The Aggies won three of their first four games at the Sportco Kick-Off to start the season and also pieced together a three-game win streak by sweeping a doubleheader with Sacramento State and defeating Portland State. The win streak was interrupted by an 8-0 loss in six innings to UCLA on Saturday at the Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles. Sarah Axelson has a team-high 11 hits in 24 at-bats for a .458 batting average to go with a team-high seven RBI. Power is not a UCD strength as Rachel Miller hit the Aggies' only home run this season. Alex Holmes is 4-1 on the mound with a 2.97 ERA.
