SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team will look to bounce back from a difficult opening weekend against Sam Houston State. The four-game series begins on Friday, Feb. 26.
"I was excited about some aspects of our game last weekend and disappointed in others," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We played good defense and pitched very well, but I'm disappointed in our offense. That's going to get better as we go. One of my goals for this week is to make sure we are taking better at-bats and seeing the ball better."
Jordan Whatcott starts game one on the mound for Utah.
Utah opened its season with a 1-2 effort against UC Davis. The Utes fell in their season opener, 4-1, and were held to only two hits. Utah's offensive production picked up in the second game of the series, winning 7-1 behind solid pitching from Andrew Wilding and a four run seventh inning as well as a three-run ninth inning. Tyler Yagi, C.J. Cron and Jo Jo Sharrar each had two hits in the second game. In game three, Utah scattered seven hits and had several runners in scoring position, but could not capitalize, falling 6-1. Yagi went 3-for-4 while Brock Duke and Zach Adams each had strong season debuts in relief on the mound.
Sam Houston State was swept in its opening weekend by No. 11 TCU, falling 4-0, 12-7 and 15-2 over three games. Taylor Davis had five hits, including two doubles and a home run, over the three-game series. Mark Hudson tallied four hits for the Bearkats and scored two runs. On the mound, Dallas Gallant had the best performance, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings pitched. He also tallied four strikeouts.
