SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team begins its 2010 schedule with five games in three days at the Red Desert Classic. The Utes will face San Jose State (11 a.m.) and Northern Colorado, (4 p.m.) on Friday, Idaho State (11 a.m.) and Seattle University (4 p.m.) on Saturday then Tulsa (11 a.m.) on Sunday. All five games will be played at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George, Utah.

Last Time at the Red Desert Classic: The Utes went 3-2 at the Red Desert Classic in the first weekend of the 2009 season with wins over San Jose State (6-5), Utah State (10-0 in six innings), and Utah Valley (10-2 in five innings). Utah dropped an 11-5 decision to Loyola Marymount then lost 4-0 to No. 15/21 Washington. Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho) combined for a six-inning no-hitter against the Aggies. Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) went 8-for-16 over the weekend with three home runs and seven RBI. Foster also scored six runs and stole two bases.
Hammerin' Utes: The Utes led the MWC with 58 home runs last season. Utah held a 10-home run advantage over BYU and UNLV, who tied for second place.
Making Their Mark: Foster and Smuda could potentially move into the top five of seven different categories in the Utah career record books. Foster could crack the top five in batting average (.327, .14 shy of No. 5), runs (107, 23 shy of No. 5), doubles (29, 11 shy of No. 5) and RBI (129, two shy of tying for No. 4). Smuda could enter the top five in appearances (78, 30 shy of No. 5), wins (30, 23 shy of No. 5) and strikeouts (285, 56 shy of No. 5).
