2009-10 Utah Men's Basketball Schedule
SALT LAKE CITY - The Runnin' Utes (14-14, 7-7 MWC) host No. 14/15 BYU (26-4, 11-3 MWC) Wednesday in the Deseret First Duel. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Jon M. Huntsman Center and the game will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
Utah is coming off a 74-64 home victory over Wyoming, marking its second straight win and its third in the last four games. BYU is looking to bounce back from an 83-81 loss at home to New Mexico in its last outing. The Cougars had won their previous four contests.
The first time Utah and BYU met this season was Jan. 30 in Provo, Utah, where the Utes fell by an 82-69 score, despite cutting the Cougar lead to only four with less than seven minutes left in the game. Junior forward Jay Watkins (Memphis, Tenn.) led Utah in that game with a double-double, including career-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Marshall Henderson (Hurst, Texas) also chipped in 16 points. Jimmer Fredette was the leading scorer for BYU, netting 36 points, while Tyler Haws added 15. Haws and Jackson Emery led the Cougars on the glass with seven boards apiece.
Wednesday's game marks the 250th meeting between the two schools. Utah leads the all-time series by the slightest possible margin, 125-124, including a 73-48 advantage on its home floor. The Utes beat BYU in last year's Salt Lake City matchup, 94-88 in overtime.
On the season, junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) is Utah's leading scorer with 13.3 points per game, while senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) is the Utes' top rebounder at 5.4 boards per contest. Senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) is leading the U. in assists with 3.3 per game and sophomore center David Foster (Lake Forest, Calif.) is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA with 4.1 rejections per contest. He had four blocks in the previous game against BYU. Fredette leads the MWC in scoring at 21.1 points per game and also leads the Cougars in assists with 4.9 per contest. Noah Hartsock is BYU's top rebounder at 5.0 boards per game.
In his three years as the Utah head coach, Jim Boylen has led the Utes to a 56-39 (.589) record. BYU head coach Dave Rose, now in his fifth year, holds a 123-38 (.764) record with the Cougars.
The Deseret First Duel
The rivalry series includes the 12 sports the two universities compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. Points are awarded to the winner of each competition. In men's basketball, Utah and BYU face each other twice, with each game worth five points. The Utah vs. BYU rivalry is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. In November 2005, the Wall Street Journal rated the rivalry the fourth best in college athletics.
