The University of Utah softball team will open its spring break schedule against a rigorous schedule that features three top-15 teams this weekend at the Judi Garman Classic.
The Utes will take on No. 12/9 Oklahoma for the third time in a week Thursday at 1:30 p.m. PT. The second game of opening day will be against Purdue at 8:15 p.m. PT. Utah will take on No. 5/5 Michigan Friday at 11:15 a.m. PT., before taking on No. 1/1 Washington Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PT. The Utes conclude the event Sunday against San Jose State at 3:45 p.m. PT. Utah is 10-10 entering action this weekend and is in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
Moving up the Utah Career Charts: Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) and senior Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) are mentioned in seven different categories in the Utah career record books.
Aside from being the U.'s all-time leader with 56 career home runs, Foster is listed in batting average (.329, .12 shy of No. 5), runs (120, 10 shy of No. 5), doubles (33, seven shy of No. 5) and RBI (140, 14 shy of No. 3). Smuda could enter the top five in appearances (95, 13 shy of No. 5), wins (40, 13 shy of No. 5) and strikeouts (351, 118 shy of No. 4).
Quick Starters: The Utes have scored in the first inning in 16 of their 20 games this season and are outscoring their opponents 33-15 in the first frame. Utah has also been the first team to score in 15 of its 20 games in 2010.
Taking on the Best: Utah is in pursuit of its first win against a ranked opponent since a 2-1 win over No. 19 San Diego State on April 26, 2008.
