SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team plays its first conference series of the season against New Mexico beginning the three-game series on Friday, March 19, at 6:00 p.m. in Albuquerque.
The Utes finished the Oregon State spring tournament on a high note last weekend, playing well against the Beavers before falling late and defeating Portland on Sunday.
"We played extremely well against Oregon State up until the last inning," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "If we do a couple things differently we'd probably win. The thing we need to improve on is playing at that level consistently. We haven't swung the bats great yet, and that's going to come. We're playing great defense and pitching very well and when the hitting comes around we're going to be a dangerous team."
New Mexico has had a strong start to its season, going 13-5 with a pair of wins over then-No. 1 Texas. The Lobos have won their last five games. Justin Howard leads the MWC with a .462 batting average, .543 on-base percentage and 36 hits. Howard and Rafael Neda each have a conference-high nine doubles. Neda is hitting .395.
Mike Lachapelle, who the Utes will face in Friday's game, leads the starting pitchers with a 3-0 record and a 3.95 ERA. He has 15 strikeouts. Utah's starter, Jordan Whatcott, is 1-3 on the year with a 4.84 ERA. He had a strong outing against Portland in his last start.
"New Mexico is playing great," Kinneberg said. "They're extremely tough in their home park. They are a good offensive team and have a good bullpen. They can beat you in a lot of different ways, but offense is their key component. We're going to have to do a great job pitching this week to keep them in check in that park.
