SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team is gearing up for the opening of the outdoor season with the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz. held Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the field events will open with the javelin at 3:00 p.m. MT and the track events will begin with the 400m hurdles at 6:15 p.m. On Saturday, competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the discus and 4x100m relay at 10:45 a.m.
LAST CHANCE (INDOOR) QUALIFYING MEETS (March 5-6)
The Utes sent their distance medley relay team (Mergaert, Alyssa Johnson, Lucy Yates, Abbott) to the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dam, Ind., as a last chance to qualify for the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The Utes finished fifth overall with a provisional qualifying time of 11:13.77.
Yates also competed in the 800m run at the Alex Wilson Invitational, setting a lifetime personal best of 2:07.55, an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800m run, to earn third place overall in the race.
Sophomore Langley Iverson competed in the high jump at the UW Final Qualifier in Seattle, Wash. She set a new lifetime best and provisional qualifying clearance of 5-10 (1.78m) in route to a third place overall finish.
INDOOR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Utes finished fourth overall at the Conference Championships held in Albuquerque, N.M. on Feb. 25-27. Junior Alyssa Abbott earned all-conference recognition in the 3000m run after dominating the track with a time of 9:41.57 (altitude adjusted) for first place.
Freshman Amanda Margaert competed in the mile run, finishing second overall with a time of 4:51.21 (altitude adjusted). Mergaert's time was a new lifetime best and broke Utah's school record, previously set in 2008 by former runner Chelsea DiGrazia (4:53.85).
Senior Sarah Grimm earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the weight throw at 57-10.25 (17.63m).
