BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (4-6) was defeated by No. 10-ranked California (8-2), 6-1, Tuesday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The singles matches were the first played due to weather. In the No. 5 slot Dmytro Mamedov fell to Riki McLachlan, 6-0, 6-1. Cal continued to lead from the No. 4 position Timmy Allin was defeated by Bozhidar Katsarov, 6-3, 6-3.

The Utes earned their point from the No. 6 spot. Stephen Jacobs topped Bijan Hejazi, 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 2 position Jason Smits fell to No. 59-ranked Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 6-3, 6-1. The Golden Bears clinched the match from the No. 1 slot Phillip Eilers was defeated by No. 42-ranked Pedro Zerbini, 6-4, 6-1.

In the No. 3 position Alex Golding fell to Nick Andrews in the first set, 6-2, took the second set, 6-4, and was defeated in the third set, 6-2.

Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano were defeated by Katsarov and Hejazi, 8-4, in the No. 2 slot. In the No. 1 position Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding fell to Sky Lovill and McLachlan, 8-5.

Since the match was decided in singles play the No. 3 doubles position was not played.

Utah will see No. 9-ranked Stanford tomorrow in Palo Alto, Calif. beginning at 1:30 p.m.
