SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team has a pair of firsts this week, playing its first mid-week game of the year and its first home game of the season on Tuesday, March 23, against Utah Valley.
The Utes are coming off a strong road series against New Mexico, going 2-1 over the series. Six players hit .500 or better during the weekend, including Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Nik Gumeson.
"It was a good first step for us to win a series on the road in the MWC, beating a good New Mexico team," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We are still a work in progress though. We still have some things to iron out and we need to make sure we improve this week."
Freshman Zach Adams will make his first career start against the Wolverines on the mound.
"We will be doing a little bit of pitching by committee tomorrow," Kinneberg said. "We hope to set it up from here on in where we have a regular Tuesday starter with a week's rest."
Utah Valley is coming off a 3-1 loss to Portland. The Wolverines dropped two of three of the series. UVU is led at the plate by Chris Benson, who is hitting .508 with 17 RBI on 30 hits. Jace Brinkerhoff has also been a mainstay in the Utah Valley lineup. He has a .322 batting average.
Freshman Blake Krahenbuhl is 1-1 in four appearances with a 4.40 ERA. He is making his first career start.
