SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference released its all-conference indoor track and field team this week with four Utah individual athletes and two relay teams receiving honors. The Utes compiled two event champions and two runner-ups in route to their fourth-place finish at the MWC Championships on Feb. 25-27.
Junior Alyssa Abbott earned all-conference recognition in the 3000m run after dominating the track with a time of 9:41.57 (altitude adjusted) for first place. Her time ranks third all-time in Utah school history and it was the first time a Ute has won the event in MWC history.
Freshman Amanda Margaert competed in the mile run, finishing second overall with a time of 4:51.21 (altitude adjusted). Mergaert's time was a new lifetime best and broke Utah's school record, previously set in 2008 by former runner Chelsea DiGrazia (4:53.85).
Abbott and Margaert joined Chelsey Kaplar and Lucy Yates in the distance medley relay at the championship. The group earned all-MWC honors after winning the race with an altitude adjusted time of 11:28.41. The performance ranks second in MWC Championships history and is third in the all-time MWC record book. The Utes snapped BYU's winning streak in the event as they have won all but two DMR races in conference history.
Kaplar also ran in the 4x400m relay team that earned all-conference honors for their combined time of 3:45.35, which earned third place at the championships. Kaplar was joined by Alyssa Johnson, Ashley Mosley and Lauryn McKay. It was a season-best finish for a Utah 4x400m relay team and it ranks third all-time in school history.
Sophomore Langley Iverson was a runner up in the high jump at the conference championships after clearing a height of 8.75 (1.75m).
Senior Sarah Grimm earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish in the weight throw at 57-10.25 (17.63m).
