SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute track & field team won seven events at the Utah Spring Classic Saturday at the Tally Stevens Outdoor Track Complex.
"First of all, we drew great weather," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We were really fortunate, considering it snowed on Tuesday. I feel really good. We had a great day working the meet. I want to say thank you to all of the volunteers who came out and supported us. Our program is growing and it's supported by our former athletes and parents who came out and helped run events. Five years ago, we hardly had any help and now we have a lot of people pitching in and asking us when the meets are. The program continues to grow and move forward.
"As far as the results today, we won seven events all over the board," Kepler said. "It wasn't a perfect day, by any means, but we definitely saw some kids take the next step and we have a couple who have made some really big steps. We're looking forward to seeing them continue to improve. [The impressive performances came from] up and down the lineup."
Angela Kaplar took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.90 seconds with a +1.5 mph wind.
"If we had to pick a performer of the meet, it would probably be Angie," Kepler said. "A freshman who ran a huge PR in the 100-meter hurdles by about .3 seconds. That's huge. I really feel good about where she's headed."
Chelsey Kaplar just missed a personal-best performance in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a time of 1:00.25 to win the event title. It was her fastest time of the season but her personal best still stands at 1:00.01. Stephanie Muelleck finished third at a time of 1:03.70.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Natalie Young, Lucy Yates, Amanda Mergaert and Muelleck posted a first-place time at 3:49.16.
In the 800-meter race, Mergaert won the event with a time of 2:14.56.
In the field events, Sarah Grimm won the hammer throw with a distance of 193'2" (58.88m), while Anneli Stahl was second with a throw of 170'8.75" (52.04m).
Sophomore Brianna LeRoy took first in the women's long jump with an 18'3" (5.56m) effort into a -0.8 mph wind.
The Utes also took the top two spots in the high jump with Langley Iverson taking home the high jump title with a 5'7" (1.70m) height and LeRoy followed in second place with a mark of 5'5" (1.65m).
Former Ute and unattached runner Chelsea Shapard took second place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.30.
"Overall, it was a really nice day and a nice meet," Kepler said. "We have some big meets ahead of us. We'll send a small group of distance runners to Mt. Sac and the rest will be at Utah State next weekend. We'll be right back at it Saturday afternoon to try to keep improving and going forward."
The Utes travel to the Mt. Sac Relays and the Mark Faldmo Invitational in Logan, Utah next Friday through Sunday.
