SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-13, 2-2 MWC) upsets No. 58-ranked UNLV (12-9, 2-2 MWC), 4-3, Friday at Liberty Park Tennis Center. Dmytro Mamedov clinched the match from the No. 6 position topping Kasper Konyves, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
In doubles Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding downed Mehdi Bouras and Luca Barlocchi, 8-3, from the No. 1 position.
The Rebels answered with a win from the No. 3 slot Stephen Jacobs and Mamedov fell to Attila Toth and Konyves, 8-4. UNLV clinched the doubles point from the No. 2 spot Timmy Allin and Jason Smits were defeated by Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman, 8-4.
With the Utes down 1-0 in the match Golding topped Markel, 6-2, 6-3, from the No. 3 position. Eilers continued Utah's lead from the No. 1 slot downing Bouras, 7-6(8), 6-2.
The Rebels answered back with two wins from the Nos. 2 and 5 positions. Smits fell to Barlocchi, 6-4, 7-6(3), and Jacobs was defeated by Schoeman, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(6).
In the No. 4 spot Allin tied the match at 3-3 topping Toth, 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-6(7), setting up Mamedov to clinch the upset from the No. 6 position downing Konyves giving Utah their second conference win of the season.
The Utes host San Diego State tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. at the Liberty Park Tennis Center.
