SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will be splitting up this weekend between three meets in Arkansas, Oregon and California. The sprinters will compete at the Arkansas Twilight on Friday. A limited group of distance runners will be competing on Saturday at the Payton Jordan Carnival Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Also on Saturday, two throwers will be competing at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore.
LEADING THE WAY
At the Arkansas Twilight, true freshman Angela Kaplar will be competing in the 100m hurdles. Her current personal best time is 13.90 (13.94 with altitude adjustment), which she set at the Utah Spring Classic on April 10. She currently owns the fifth fastest time in the Mountain West Conference and 45th in the NCAA West Region. Kaplar will also be competing in the 200m dash on Friday.
At the Oregon Relays, senior Sarah Grimm will be competing in the hammer on Saturday. She is the current MWC Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week after a record breaking weekend at the Robison Invitational. Grimm broke the four-year school record with a toss of 207-1.75 for a new lifetime personal best. After leading the conference all season, she is now ranked fifth in the country and second in the region. Freshman Anneli Stahl will also be competing in the hammer on Saturday with Grimm.
Sophomore Lucy Yates will be leading the group of distance runners at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. Yates has a current personal best time of 2:08.45 in the 800m run, which ranks second all-time in Utah school history. She currently has the fifth fastest time in the conference and 27th fastest in the region. Yates will join teammate Amanda Mergaert in both the 800m run and 1500m run on Saturday.
LAST WEEK
Robison Invitational
Grimm broke the school record in the hammer throw, previously owned by Vanessa Mortensen (205-0), with a toss of 207-1.75.
Freshman Nikkie Rudder won the shot put on Saturday with a new lifetime personal best with a toss of 45-9.25 (13.95m) which ranks fifth all-time in school history.
In the 1500m run, freshman Megan Combe and senior Sydney Osmun both set new personal bests. Combe earned fourth place overall with a time of 4:39.82 (altitude adjusted). Osmun finished the race in 4:51.27 to earn eighth place overall.
Drake Relays
The University of Utah picked up it's first ever victory in a university division event. Junior Alyssa Abbott won the 1500m race with a time of 4:23.48 for a new lifetime personal best. Her time ranks second in the Utah school record books, first in the MWC, and 21st in the West region. Mergaert finished fourth in the same race with a new personal best time of 4:26.56 which is fourth in Utah school history, fifth in the MWC, and 48th in the region.
The sprint medley group comprised of of Whitney Wellington, Lauryn McKay, Ashley Mosely, and Yates finished eighth overall at the meet with a time of 3:55.51.
