The University of Utah softball team will open Mountain West Conference play with a pair of Deseret First Duel series Friday and Saturday against BYU. First pitch from Gail Miller Field on Friday is slated for 6 p.m. with BYU-TV providing a live telecast. Saturday's game starts at 2 p.m.
Utah has won five of its last six games and is 17-18 entering conference, including a two-game split at Boise State and doubleheader sweeps against Southern Utah and Weber State.
Last Time Out: The Utes split a doubleheader at Boise State on Tuesday. Sophomore left fielder Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.) hit two home runs and drove in three runs while senior Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up her 14th win of the season in game two, coming on in relief for five innings and giving up only one hit while striking out two.
Moving up the Utah Career Charts: Smuda and Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) are included in seven different categories in the Utah career record books.
Smuda could enter the top five in appearances (106, two shy of No. 5), wins (44, nine shy of No. 5) and strikeouts (377, 92 shy of No. 4).
Aside from being third in MWC history and the U.'s all-time leader with 59 career home runs, Foster is listed in batting average (.332, .09 shy of No. 5), runs (133, No. 5), doubles (36, four shy of No. 5) and RBI (153, one shy of No. 3).
