SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team returns to conference action this weekend with a three-game series against UNLV, beginning on Friday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
The Utes are 5-1 in the MWC, just ahead of New Mexico, which is second with a 6-3 record.
"Each game is important because we want to be in the mix for the highest seed we can get at the MWC Tournament," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We have put ourselves in a position where we need to start thinking about that. We need to play every inning, every pitch, every game."
Utah is on a four-game winning streak after defeating Southern Utah on Wednesday, 15-7. C.J. Cron, who leads the MWC in both batting average and slugging percentage, hit two home runs and had a team-high three hits in the win.
UNLV has a strong 17-13 record but has struggled in conference play, just 2-4 after going 1-2 against both BYU and New Mexico. The Rebels are coming off a two-game split with Texas Tech.
Jordan Whatcott starts Friday's game on the mound for Utah. He has a 4-3 record with a 3.48 ERA. For UNLV, Friday starter Tanner Peters leads the MWC with 56 strikeouts. He has a 7.59 ERA and a 2-2 record.
