Cron Named MWC Baseball Player of the Week
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team closes out its regular season this weekend with a three-game series against New Mexico, beginning on Thursday, May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Utes will celebrate senior day during Saturday's game.
Teams are jostling for seeding in the Mountain West Conference tournament in the final weekend of regular season competition. UNLV (11-10), San Diego State (10-11), Brigham Young (10-11) and Utah (9-12) are all battling for the third through sixth seeds. Utah has the toughest road against New Mexico (13-7), while UNLV takes on San Diego State and BYU faces Air Force. TCU has already locked up the No. 1 seed with a 19-5 MWC record and Air Force cannot move above the seventh spot (the tournament only features the top six teams).
C.J. Cron was selected as the MWC Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .467 (7-of-15) in the three-game series last weekend against UNLV. He had four doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI during the series, in which Utah rallied to win the final two games after dropping game one despite a late-inning comeback. In game three, Cron hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the ninth inning to give the Utes the win.
With a 34-17 overall record, New Mexico is receiving votes in several of the major polls. The Lobos are hitting a conference-high .355, led by Justin Howard's .466 batting average.
The Utes took two of three from New Mexico back on March 19-21. Utah opened the series with a 16-2 win behind 21 hits and a solid outing on the mound by Jordan Whatcott. Cron had nine RBI off of three hits, including two home runs. The Utes fell in game two, 5-2, before winning game three in 10 innings, 9-8. Utah overcame an 8-5 deficit in the ninth inning of the third game.
