SALT LAKE CITY - Former University of Utah walk-on guard Tre Smith has been awarded a scholarship to play for Div. II Southwest Baptist University.
"Tre has worked extremely hard in our program and we are very proud that he has been given this opportunity," said Boylen. "Tre will now be able to continue his education with less financial pressure, while also contending for more time on the court. He is a model student-athlete and he will be missed in our program, but we support his transfer and believe he will do very well playing for [SBU head coach] Jeff Guiot."
Smith, who earned a roster spot as a freshman walk-on in Boylen's first year at Utah in 2007-08, appeared in nine games in 2009-10 as a redshirt sophomore. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at SBU.
"My family and I are very thankful for the support and guidance of Coach Boylen and Coach [Stan] Johnson through this process with Southwest Baptist," said Smith. "The chance I was given to play at Utah has now led to the great opportunity I have with SBU and I am very grateful."
"Tre has been in an outstanding program for three years," said Guiot. "He is a pass first-type player who sees the floor well and brings leadership, speed and quickness. He'll be great for the locker room and practice. Tre does stuff the right way. He was a walk-on initially for the Utes and later became a team captain."
"Coach Johnson, who knows our program, thought Tre would be a great fit," Guiot added. Johnson was an assistant under Guiot for the Bearcats for three seasons and is now entering his third season as an assistant under Boylen.
