SALT LAKE CITY - Former Utah pitcher Jordan Whatcott signed a free-agent contact with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. He was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Phillies.
Whatcott becomes the seventh former Ute currently playing in the minor leagues, joining Jay Brossman, Brian Budrow, Stephen Fife, Ryan Khoury, Chris Shelton and Jesse Shriner.
Whatcott had been drafted last season in the 31st round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Angels, but chose to return to Utah for his senior year He was a second-team All-Mountain West Conference selection in 2009 and earned MWC All-Tournament team honors after being one of the key pitchers in Utah's run to the MWC Tournament title.
Whatcott, a Phoenix, Ariz., native who played two years at Utah after transferring from South Mountain Community College, finished his career with a 10-12 record and a 5.32 ERA. He had 120 strikeouts and picked off 11 runners.
