Former Ute Eilers Wins US Open Sectional Qualifier

DENVER - Phillip Eilers punched his ticket to the US Open National Playoffs - Men's and Women's Championships by winning the title at the USTA Intermountain Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Denver, Tuesday.
The final pitted Eilers, 24, a recent graduate of the University of Utah, against Spencer Smith, 20, of rival Brigham Young University, with Eilers winning 6-3, 6-4, to take the Intermountain sectional crown. Eilers played No. 1 singles and doubles his senior year at Utah and was named 2009-10 Mountain West Conference co-Player of the Year.
With the victory, Eilers advances to the US Open National Playoffs - Men's Championships at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Atlanta, July 22-25, during the Atlanta Tennis Championships, the first event of the 2010 Olympus US Open Series.
The winners of the US Open National Playoffs - Men's and Women's Championships earn a wild card into the 2010 US Open Qualifying Tournament, August 24-27.
