In a poll of media members who cover the Mountain West Conference, the Utah football team was predicted to finish second in its final year in the league. The Utes received 242 points to finish behind TCU (279 points). The results of the 2011 MWC Preseason Poll were announced today at the MWC Football Media Day being held at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas. The event continues through Wednesday.
The remainder of the MWC preseason poll had Brigham Young third with 207 points, followed by Air Force (195), Wyoming (147), San Diego State (128), Colorado State (96), UNLV (56) and New Mexico (45).
Utah, which has accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10 Conference beginning in 2011, is coming off a 10-3 season that concluded with a 37-27 victory over California in the Poinsettia Bowl. The 2009 Utes went 6-2 in conference play to finish third. Utah returns eight starters on offense and four on defense.
Four of those returning starters were selected to the preseason all-conference team: senior running back Eddie Wide, senior offensive linemen Caleb Schlauderaff and Zane Taylor, and junior defensive back Brandon Burton. Wide is a returning first-team all-MWC performer, while Schlauderaff and Taylor made the second team in 2009.
