Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinnberg began his summer stint as the head coach of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this week, as tryouts started on Monday. The 36-man tryout roster will be narrowed down to 22 players with three alternates this coming Sunday.
The week began with some bad news, as C.J. Cron suffered a knee injury in his final Cape League game last Sunday. He was not able to continue with tryouts and will be placed on the alternate list.
Kinneberg chatted with UtahUtes.com about his experiences with USA Baseball.
How disappointing is this for C.J. Cron?
It's really a sad situation that he got hurt before he came in to showcase for this team. It's too bad for him and it's too bad for our team because he would have been a valuable member of the team. He is on the alternate list and if someone gets hurt and his rehab goes well, he still could be activated.
Describe a typical day of tryouts.
The last few days we worked out in the morning and did a lot of individual and team defense, and situational hitting. We have been getting to know the guys and watching them. In the evenings we have played 7-9 innings of intrasquad games. This is probably as good of competition as they will see in their college careers because of the talent level of all of these guys.
What are you looking for in selecting the final roster?
We are looking at carrying 10-11 pitchers and trying to have the right combination of position players that can play a few positions. We want a balanced lineup against right or left handed pitchers. It's going to be a tough decision. We have about 20 position players who we could pick any 12 and have a really good team. It comes down to who really shows the best and who is going to be a guy that can handle a demanding five-week schedule of play. They are all good players, but we've got to find the best combination of guys to win a championship.
Do you feel a sense of urgency among the players?
Sure. There's tremendous competition here. These guys are elite athletes and they've had this all their lives. They are stars and they are used to this. They understand that this is the way it's going to be from here on out once they start playing pro ball.
