SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior cornerback Brandon Burton is one of 35 defensive backs named to the Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list, the nominating committee announced today. The Jim Thorpe Award honors the nation's best collegiate defensive back and the watch list is based on the preseason All-America teams listed in at least six college football annual magazines.
Burton, who was recently named to the preseason all-Mountain West Conference team, led Utah and tied for second in the league in pass breakups last season with 10. He also had 47 tackles, 4.0 TFL, a sack and an interception as a sophomore in 2009.
He is the third Ute to date named to a 2010 watch list. Earlier, senior offensive linemen Zane Taylor and Caleb Schlauderaff were named to the Outland Trophy Watch List. Taylor and Schlauderaff were also seleccted to the preseason all-MWC team, as was senior running back Eddie Wide.
