This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team heads to Athens, Ga. this weekend to face the University of Georgia and UNC Greensboro. The Utes will take on the host Bulldogs Friday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. MT and will face UNCG at 9 a.m. MT on Sunday.
The All-Time Series...
Utah holds a 1-1-0 all-time record against Georgia, with each team winning once on the opposition's field. In their last meeting, the No. 19-ranked Bulldogs topped the Utes in Salt Lake City in 2008 by a 2-1 score. Utah's victory against UGA came in 2000 as the Utes captured a 3-2 victory in Athens.
Utah and UNCG have met just once, with the Utes taking down a 2-1 double-overtime victory on the Spartans' home field in Greensboro in 2008.
Scouting This Week's Opposition...
Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia dropped its season-opener against Duke at home last weekend, falling by a 1-0 score.
Last year, UGA posted a 15-6-1 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs return seven of their top eight scorers from last year, led by junior forward Ashley Miller, who tallied six goals and six assists last year for 18 points. She is joined by junior midfielder Jamie Pollock (6 goals, 1 assist, 13 points) and junior forward Alex Hooker (5 goals, 1 assist, 11 points). Georgia lost all-time leading scorer Carrie Patterson, who accounted for 11 goals and five assists as a senior, to graduation.
In goal for the Bulldogs is redshirt sophomore Ashley Baker, who made eight saves in the loss to the Blue Devils. She is in her first year as the starter between the pipes after the graduation of four-year starting keeper Michelle Betos.
Georgia is coached by Steve Holeman, in his first year as the Bulldogs' head coach.
UNC Greensboro Spartans
UNC Greensboro opened its season with a 2-0 home victory against East Carolina last weekend. Sophomore forward Tabitha Padgett and freshman midfielder Kory Spotts each netted first-half goals for the Spartans.
Padgett is the top returning offensive player for UNCG, coming off an eight-goal debut season that also included three assists for a total of 19 points. Sophomore forward Lauren Hein also returns from a five-goal, four-assist effort as a freshman last year.
In goal for the Spartans is Kelsey Kearney, who made five saves in her season-opening shutout. Last year, she allowed just 15 goals in 19 games, posting a GAA of 0.80 and a .810 save percentage.
UNCG is coached by Eddie Radwanski, now in his 10th year at the Spartans' helm.
Dalley Leading the Utah Attack...
Junior forward Erin Dalley scored her first goal of the season against Gonzaga at the WSU Invitational last weekend, picking up where she left off as Utah's leading scorer in 2009. A first-team All-MWC selection last year, Dalley leads the Utes and the Mountain West Conference with eight shots taken in the first two games, including four on goal.
Dalley was also named to the WSU Invitational All-Tournament team.
Fresh Faces on the Scoresheet...
Freshman forward Lexi Krantz was credited with the assist on Dalley's goal, getting on the scoresheet in her collegiate debut. Four other true freshmen have appeared in games for Utah this year, including Jen Ericson, Stacy Fujikuni, Leslie Muirhead and Harley Spier.
Additionally, redshirt sophomore Kellie Woodfield has returned to the lineup after missing most of last year with a foot injury.
Last Time Out...
Utah lost its first two games of the season by the narrowest of margins, dropping one-goal decisions to Gonzaga, 2-1, and No. 21-ranked Washington State, 1-0.
Preseason Prognostication...
Utah was selected second in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, tying SDSU with 37 points. The Utes also received one first-place vote.
BYU was predicted to finish first, receiving 48 points and six of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. SDSU received the only other first-place vote in the poll.
TCU and New Mexico were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 35 and 24 points, respectively. Wyoming was ranked sixth (21 points), while UNLV (15 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the top eight.
Utah's Mountain West Conference History...
Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the MWC. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU.
Utah's next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes' trophy case at season's end.
In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title.
The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1.
With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC's history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
