SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-8-0) fell at No. 2-ranked Stanford (5-0-2) by a 6-1 score Friday.
After falling behind 4-0, Utah got on the scoreboard in the 34th minute as junior defender Lauren Porter scored her first goal of the season. Porter buried a header off a cross from senior forward Lauren Hair, who had received the ball from a corner kick by senior defender Morgan Skeen. It was Hair's first assist of the season and the second for Skeen.
Stanford had opened up the scoring just 8:05 into the contest as Christen Press netted the first of her three goals. She became the first player to log a hat trick against the Utes since Chichi Nweke scored three for Illinois in 2006. Press' other tallies came at the 17:47 and 31:21 marks.
The Cardinal saw three other players find the back of the net, including Teresa Noylan, who scored the eventual game-winner at the 11:03 mark, Marjani Hing-Glover (77:04) and Shelby Payne (79:08). Camille Levin and Noylan each notched two assists, while six other Cardinal players were also credited with helpers.
Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made seven saves in the net for the Utes, while Stanford's Emily Oliver recorded three stops in net. Stanford outshot Utah 26-7, while corner kicks went 8-4 in the Cardinal's favor. Fouls were whistled 10-9 against the Utes.
The Utes take on another top 25 foe Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT as they clash with No. 11-ranked Santa Clara.
