TEMPE, Ariz. - Stephanie Neeley, Morgan Odale and Karolina Bartkowiak each recorded double-doubles but the Utah volleyball team lost in four sets to No. 21 Michigan (20-25, 17-25, 25-23, 21-25) Saturday in its second match of the Arizona State Sheraton Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.
Utah (4-7) received impressive all-around performances from Neeley, Odale and Bartkowiak throughout the match.
Neeley coordinated the Ute attack with 36 assists and provided 13 digs as well as two blocks. Neeley has 21 career double-doubles and seven this season.
Odale posted her eighth double-figure-kill match this season with a team-high 15. The Star, Idaho native now owns five career double-doubles after popping up 11 Wolverine attack attempts to go along with four blocks.
Barktowiak registered a solid performance with 12 kills and 12 digs for her third double-double this season and the 15th of her career. The Aurora, Ill., native took 25 swings with only three errors for a .360 hitting percentage. She has hit double-digits in kills on seven occasions this year.
Freshman middle blocker Erin Redd hit double-digits in kills for the first time in her career with 13 kills on just 20 attempts and two errors for a .550 hitting percentage. Redd also tied for team-high honor with four blocks.
Keisha Fisher patrolled the back row with a team-high 14 digs extend her double-digit-dig match streak to 13 straight and she now has 70 double-figure-dig performances in her career. Fisher, a Ririe, Idaho native, has led or tied for team-high honors in eight matches this season and now has 1,262 career digs, which is 276 shy of the school record.
The first set was tied at 12 points apiece before Michigan scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 19-15 lead. Unfortunately, Utah could get no closer than three points during the remainder of the set and would suffer a 25-20 win. Odale pounded down six kills, but the Utes were outhit, .406 to .135.
The Utes could never grab the lead from Michigan in a 25-17 second-set loss. Bartkowiak led the way with three kills on five attempts for a .600 mark in the set.
The Wolverines took an 8-4 lead early in the third set. Utah came back promptly with a 6-2 spurt to tie the set for the first time. The set would be tied 11 more times before the Utes scored consecutive points with the teams knotted at 23 to go on to a 25-23 win. Odale hit for six more kills along with four from Redd and three from Bartkowiak, while Neeley dished out 13 assists. Bartkowiak and Fisher registered six digs apiece in the set along with three from Neeley.
Utah was within a point of Michigan at 19-18 lead in the fourth set, but the Wolverines scored six of the next nine points to take the 25-22 win. Bartkowiak and Redd both had four kills apiece, but the Utes were limited to a .086 hitting percentage in the frame while the Wolverines were hitting at a .220 clip.
Michigan (10-1) received 23 kills on 45 attempts from Alex Hunt, while Sloane Donhoff posted a match-high 24 digs for the Wolverines.
