With baseball in the offseason, UtahUtes.com spotlights a different student-athlete every week in '10 Questions With' that will lead fans up to the start of the 2011 season. This week's spotlight is senior outfielder Austin Shackelford.
What is your favorite baseball memory?
Winning the 2006 Arizona State Championship, we 10-run ruled our rival.
What do you like to do when you are not playing baseball?
Watch movies, play wiffle ball, hang out with friends and translate Latin.
Do you have a nickname? How did you get your nickname?
`Shak' - my last name is Shackelford, and I'm really good at basketball.
Why did you choose Utah? What is the best thing about Utah?
I chose Utah so I could compete at a high level of baseball and have a big school environment at the same time. The football games are a blast to go to.
My favorite thing about Salt Lake City is:
The big city atmosphere without the big city clutter. The fall weather is also amazing and the outdoors are not far for recreation.
The teammate I most admire is who, and why?
Stephen Streich, his attitude and mental toughness have been great examples for me to emulate when I am playing.
What do you like best about Coach Kinneberg?
He has a solid knowledge of the game and sees things that not many people will see. He is also a very personable guy in one-on-one situations.
What are your goals for this year?
My goals are to play to the best of my ability and fit into any role that this team needs. I would also like to help mold team chemistry and get this team back to the postseason.
What are your pregame superstitions?
To get dressed up before home games for my trip to Spring Mobile.
What is your major and what do you want to do after you graduate?
My major is Classics with an emphasis on Latin. I would like to play professional baseball after I graduate, but if it does not work out I am planning on applying to dental school.
