SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman wing J.J. O'Brien turned in his second double-double in three games to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team (9-10, 2-3 MWC) to an 82-72 win against New Mexico (13-6, 1-3 MWC) for its second consecutive Mountain West Conference win Wednesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes shot 50.9% (27-of-53) from the floor while New Mexico was at 42.9% (27-of-63). Utah also had success from 3-point territory, connecting for 52.6% (10-of-19) while New Mexico was 29.4% (5-of-17). The Utes also benefitted from a strong start and connected on 10 of their first 14 shots from the field en route to their highest single-game offensive output in conference play this season.
O'Brien scored a career-high 18 points on a 7-of-13 night from the field and also collected a game-high 10 rebounds. O'Brien set the tone early for the Utes by making three of his four shots of the game.
Josh Watkins poured in a game-high 22 points off a 6-of-12 shooting effort, including an 8-of-10 mark from the charity stripe.
Shawn Glover connected on a career-high four of his seven attempts from 3-point territory and turned in 12 points, which fell one point shy of tying his career high. Glover also contributed to Utah's quick start by starting the game 3-of-4 from beyond the arc
Junior center David Foster was credited with a game-high three blocks and now has 176 over his career, which stands just 29 rejections shy of tying Luke Nevill's Utah career record of 205 from 2005-09. Foster also had a presence on the glass by collecting eight rebounds.
The teams combined to make four of their first five shots at the start of the contest, including layups on two consecutive possessions by O'Brien. A 3-pointer by Will Clyburn then gave Utah its first lead of the contest at 7-6. Utah then extended its lead to 13 points at 27-14 after a 20-6 run and worked their largest lead of the half to 19 points (45-26) after the Utes scored eight consecutive points. Utah shot 54.8% (17-of-31) from the field in the first half, including a 58.8% (7-of-12) mark from 3-point territory. O'Brien led the way with 10 points on a 5-of-8 effort from the floor, followed by nine points from Glover, who made three of his four attempts from beyond the arc. Utah's 45 first-half points was also a season-high mark.
Utah maintained a double-digit lead throughout a majority of the second half but New Mexico did manage to get within nine points at 50-41. The Utes were able to push their lead to 20 (70-50) points after a 7-0 spurt at the six-minute mark. The Lobos responded with a 12-3 stretch to pull within eight points at 73-65.
New Mexico was led by a team-high 18 points from Kendall Williams. Drew Gordon scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Dairese Gary pitched in 15 points while Phillip McDonald contributed 11.
The Utes continue their MWC schedule Saturday at TCU. Tip-off in Fort Worth is slated for 4 p.m. MT.
