Ute Outfield Will Feature Two New Starters:
Junior left fielder Hannah Clements enters the season as the lone returning starter in the Ute outfield. Clements is expected to really have an impact on offense for the Utes as a rock solid fixture in the batting order.
Freshman Tara Glover, a Grants Pass, Ore., native, is a potential impact player who is slated to start in center field. Glover is a left-handed hitter who will be a true `table-setter' at the plate for the Utes and also offers incredible range in the outfield.
"[Glover] is ready offensively and defensively," Utah head coach Amy Hogue said. "She is the fastest kid on the team. She played at a high level this summer and transitioning to NCAA Division I softball has been relatively easy for her."
Sophomore Kayla Ensminger, a transfer from Phoenix College, joins the Utah lineup after hitting .400 last season and earning all-region recognition as well as winning the school's Best Infielder award.
"[Ensminger] has done a great job, not just in the outfield but offensively. She is a fearless, aggressive, and tough player and was very clutch this fall. She does a little bit of everything --- runs and throws well and hits with power. She is going to be hard to beat out for playing time, but Cheyella Myers is right on her tail."
Myers, a freshman from Taylorsville, Utah, was arguably the best prospect in the state of Utah coming out of Tooele High School and will serve as a utility player at nearly every position on the field during her first season with the Utes.
"[Myers] will have opportunities to prove herself at the plate," Hogue said. "Since she is so versatile on defense it will help her chances to crack the lineup."
Sophomore Sandi Bowles will present another option for Hogue in the Ute outfield.
"[Bowles] was a defensive specialist last year and earned 14 starts as a freshman," Hogue said. "She is looking to improve on that number this year."
Player Notes:
Hannah Clements
Jr. ? OF ? L/R ? 5-2 ? Poway, Calif. ? Poway H.S
Clements Notes: Has made 101 starts, mostly in left field, in her first two seasons at Utah ... made big offensive adjustments this fall ... a triple threat at the plate ... can knock the ball out of the park, lay down a bunt, or slap for a base hit on any given pitch ... one of the leaders in the Mountain West Conference in extra-base hits and on-base percentage.
Tara Glover
Fr. ? OF ? Grants Pass, Ore. ? Grants Pass HS
Glover Notes: Quickest player Hogue has ever signed ... left-handed hitter with power and speed ... range in outfield is incredible ... potential impact player from day one both in the outfield and in the front of the batting lineup ... true `table-setter.'
Kayla Ensminger
