TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior pitcher Generra Nielson earned her second shutout victory in as many games this season with a six-inning, one-hitter to help the University of Utah softball team to a 6-0 victory over Western Michigan Friday in the Kajikawa Classic at Farrington Stadium.
Including a 10-0 win in five innings over Mississippi yesterday, Utah (2-0) has outscored its opponents 16-0 over its first two games.
Naomi Amu went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and Tia Palauni drove in a pair of runs.
In her second shutout in as many days, Nielson retired the first six hitters she faced before allowing a leadoff walk in the third inning. She did not allow a hit until there were two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blanding, Utah native allowed only one hit in six innings of work to improve to 2-0 this season. She struck out nine and only walked two.
Utah got off to another fast start with two runs in its first at-bat. Tara Glover opened the game with a leadoff walk then stole second base and Clements singled to put runners on first and third base. Glover scored the first run of the game after Holm reached on an error by the Bronco second baseman then Clements plated Utah' second score after a WMU wild pitch.
Amu slapped a double to right field then Palauni connected on a two-run home run over the left-center field wall with two out in the top of the fourth inning. It was Palauni's 10th career homer as well as Utah's first of the season.
In the seventh inning, Glover reached base after getting hit by a pitch then moved to third base after a fielder's choice by Olson. Then a throwing error put runners on second and third base. Glover scored on an RBI ground ball by Cheyella Myers.
Western Michigan (0-2) had its lone hit from leadoff hitter Jennifer Tschetter.
The Utes continue Kajikawa Classic action today at 4:30 p.m. against No. 2/1 Arizona at the Tempe Sports Complex.
