SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team will open its 2011 campaign on Friday, Feb. 18, against California for the first of a three-game series.
"We are very excited to get the season going after a long fall and a good six weeks of practice this spring," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Our non-conference schedule is the toughest it has ever been here, and we are anxious to match up against the best teams in the country."
Second-team all-Mountain West Conference senior left-handed pitcher Rick Anton will start Friday's game for the Utes, facing Cal junior righty Erik Johnson
The Utes return a solid core of players from a team that finished 23-28 a year ago, including 2010 first-team junior All-America catcher C.J. Cron, three-year senior starter Michael Beltran, and Anton. Utah is also excited about a solid class of newcomers that will be expected to make an immediate impact.
Utah has been picked to finish sixth in the MWC. Cron was a preseason all-conference selection.
California has been ranked in several preseason polls, with their highest ranking of 17th coming from Baseball America. Cal is coming off a 29-25 season and received an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Bears return three first-team all-Pac-10 players in junior catcher Chadd Krist, sophomore left-handed pitcher Justin Jones and sophomore second baseman Tony Renda.
