SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team defeated Montana State Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes battled back after dropping the doubles point for a 4-3 win. Freshman Alejandro Medinilla earned the match clinching point for Utah with his 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, defeat of Alberto Fuentes at No. 3 singles spot.

"We didn't play a great match today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "But we fought hard and came up with a win. With a young team, any win is a good win."

Although the Utes got off to a rocky start, freshman Devin Lane's 6-1, 6-1 win over Prithiv Sivasubramaniam at the No. 4 slot evened out the score at 1-1. Matt Cowley added to that with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Diego Campos at the fifth position.

With the score at 2-1 in favor of Utah, Montana State fought back when junior Benito Suriano dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Pawel Turzanski at the top spot, evening the match, 2-2.

Freshman Gino Octa suffered a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Markus Schleuter at the No. 6 slot, putting the Bobcats up 3-2 over the Utes.

Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov tied the score at 3-3 with a 7-5, 6-3, win over Fletcher Keyes at the No. 2 position, setting up Medinilla to capture the winning point for the Utes, in a hard-fought match at the No. 3 spot.

In doubles play, Suriano and Cowley were overcome by Keyes and Turzanski, 8-5, at the No. 1 position, while Lane and Medinilla suffered an 8-6 loss at the No. 2 slot to Fuentes and Campos, giving Montana State the doubles point.

At the No. 3 position Mamedov and Octa netted an 8-6 win over Sivasubramaniam and Schleuter.

Utah returns to action tomorrow when they host Portland State at the Eccles Tennis Center, at 2 p.m.
