SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (4-4) blanked Portland State (3-6) Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Freshman Gino Octa clinched the 7-0 victory for the Utes by defeating Vetu Mam, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.

"I am proud of the guys for winning the doubles point," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "They continued to battle throughout singles to come up with a 7-0 victory."

Utah started off strong, earning the doubles point despite freshmen Alejandro Medinilla and Devin Lane dropping an 8-2 decision to Chris Rice and Roman Margoulis at the top spot.

Junior Dmytro Mamedov and Octa fought back with an 8-3 defeat of Mam and Jeff Cero at the No. 3 position, setting up junior Benito Suriano and freshman Matt Cowley to clinch the doubles point.

Suriano and Cowley topped Alex VanDerschelden and Mitch Somach, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot, putting the Utes up 1-0.

Utah remained dominant in singles play, beginning with a 6-3, 6-2, win from Lane over Somach at the No. 3 position.

Suriano followed with his victory over Rice 6-3, 6-2, at the top spot, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Utes.

Octa then clinched the match at 4-0, from the No. 6 slot, snapping Mam's three-game winning streak.

Cowley furthered the Utes win from the fifth position with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 10-5, win over Matt Erickson.

Mamedov defeated VanDerschelden 7-6(4), 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Medinilla downed Margoulis 6-0, 7-6(6), at the No. 4 slot, making the final score 7-0.

The Utes return to action when they host Denver (2-2) Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
