SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (5-4) downed No. 48-ranked Denver (2-6) by a score of 5-2, Saturday in the Eccles Tennis Center. Freshman Matt Cowley earned the match clinching point for the second time this season with his victory over Varun Gunaseelen at the No. 5 spot.

"We fought hard and competed well in every single match today and we were rewarded with a win over a ranked opponent," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "This is a very good win for us and it shows that our team is developing well."

In doubles play, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Gino Octa downed Gunaseelen and Angel Alvarez, 8-3, at the No. 3 position. Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Yannick Weihs and Jonathan Kidane at the top spot.

The freshman duo of Cowley and Devin Lane were overcome at the No. 2 slot by, Andrew Landwerlen and Alex Clinkenbeard.

Utah remained strong in singles play, beginning with a victory from Octa at the No. 6 position over Alvarez by a score of 6-2, 6-2, putting the Utes up 2-0.

Lane fell to Kidane, 6-4, 6-3, at the third slot, making the score 2-1, Utah.

At the No. 4 spot, Medinilla topped Clinkenbeard, 6-3, 6-4, setting up Cowley for the match clinching point.

Cowley downed Gunaseelen, 6-3, 6-3, making the score 4-1 in favor of Utah.

With the match in hand, Mamedov battled Landwerlen for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), win at the No. 2 slot, while Suriano fell to Weihs at the top spot, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, making the final score 5-2 in favor of Utah.

The Utes return to action in Boise, Idaho when they take on Boise State, Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m.
